برای اداره دنیای مدرن امروز بیش از 5000 تخصص پیش بینی شده که بسیاری از آنها جنبه میان رشته ای داشته و یافتن مرز مشخص تفکیک بین آنها و رشته های مجاور عملا ممکن نیست. بسیاری از پایگاههای آنلاین نیز به لحاظ موضوعی به این صورت می باشند. یک مطالعه آماری نشان داده است که در چند دانشگاه دولتی داخلی بیشترین پایگاه مورد استفاده ScienceDirect بوده است. به گونه ای که اغلب محققین توانسته اند با بسنده کردن به آن بدون جستجوی دیگر سایتها تحقیق خود را کامل کنند. بهرحال در کنار این سایت که مجلات معتبر Elsevier را نمایه کرده همواره پایگاههای مهم دیگر نیز وجود دارند که مرور آنها خالی از لطف نیست. چه بسا در مواردی جستجوی آنها نتایج بهتری را نیز بدهد مخصوصا اگر نیاز به مدارک قدیمی تر برای تدوین یک مقاله مروری باشد. از دیگر پایگاههای بسیار سودمند و کلیدی IEEE یا آی تری پلی می باشد که متاسفانه پایگاه IEEE تحت قوانین سیاسی امریکا به نوعی مراکز دولتی ایران را تحریم کرده که امیدواریم بکمک این سایت بتوانید مقالاتی از آنرا دریافت نمایید. برخی از اساتید دانشکده های فنی و مهندسی در داخل ایران نیز دسترسی خصوصی و پولی به این سایت گرانبها را دارند. کم و بیش دانشگاههای فنی معتبر دنیا همگی این پایگاه را خریداری می کنند. این پایگاه گران ترین پایگاه در تمام دنیا محسوب می شود.
